Most couples searching for a wedding venue near Aix-en-Provence picture the same thing: plane trees, stone, warm evening light and guests who do not spend half the weekend in a car. The city itself offers little room for a private celebration. The countryside around it does — and 40 minutes east, in the green heart of the Var, sits one of its most unusual estates.
Domaine de Montaud is a 135-hectare family estate at Châteauvert, bordered by the Argens river and its natural waterfalls, close to Domaine de Miraval. It is hired exclusively, for three days and two nights.
Why look just beyond Aix
Aix is an easy name to give guests flying in from London, Amsterdam or New York: well connected, instantly recognisable, a pleasure to explore the day before. But venues within the city limits tend to mean shared grounds, fixed end times and a single evening. Driving 40 minutes into Provence Verte changes the scale entirely. You trade a garden for a whole valley, and a curfew for none at all.
The estate keeps the rest of the region within reach too: Brignoles is 20 minutes away, Marseille 1h15, Saint-Tropez 1h30 and Nice 1h40. Guests who want to add a few days on the coast can do so without changing their base.
A weekend, not an evening
The estate is yours from 5 p.m. on day one to 4 p.m. on day three, with no other couple on site. The weekend unfolds in six settings:
- Day one: guests settle into the gîtes and tipis, then gather for a welcome dinner beneath century-old trees and festoon lights.
- Day two: a ceremony in a shaded avenue of trees, cocktails around the pool with its view over the valley, then dinner and dancing under a 230 m² nomad tent with a wooden floor. There is no time limit on the party.
- Day three: brunch at long wooden tables, followed by an afternoon at the pool or down by the river and its waterfalls.
The estate hosts up to 150 guests for dinner and the evening. There are no imposed suppliers and no corkage fee, so your caterer, florist, band and wines are entirely your own choice. Bed linen, towels and cleaning afterwards are included.
Guests sleep on site
This is where Montaud differs from most venues around Aix. Four gîtes and a camp of five luxury tipis give 49 sleeping places in total — the bridal suite included, plus 27 beds in the gîtes and 20 in the tipis. Guest accommodation is charged at €39 per person per night, on a two-night minimum; for weekend bookings, all guest places must be reserved. For the wider guest list, a selection of guest houses and hotels lies within five kilometres, around Châteauvert and Barjols.
Keeping most of your guests on the estate means no shuttle runs at 2 a.m., and a brunch where everyone is already there. For more on this format, read our guide to Provence wedding venues with accommodation.
